GEOLOGY & FOSSILS
South Australia was once home to giant
marsupials that roamed the countryside and
an ocean filled with animals that stretched for
miles where there are now red sand dunes
and dry rocky earth.
The Flinders Ranges is one of the oldest
mountain ranges on earth and it’s here that
visitors will find the most complete significant
geological and fossil sites in the world.
It is internationally renowned for its Ediacaran
fossils – the oldest known life form on earth.
The World Heritage-listed Naracoorte Caves
on the Limestone Coast, dating 350,000
years, are home to one of the richest fossil
deposits in the world (see page 117). Explore
Kelly Hill Caves (see page 110) on Kangaroo
Island – a spectacular cave formation that
dates back more than 120,000 years. The
Gawler Ranges on Eyre Peninsula is another
geological hot spot in South Australia.
South Australia has a wide variety of golf
courses ranging from exclusive world-class
clubs in Adelaide such as Royal Adelaide
Golf Club and Kooyonga Golf Club, to the
quirky red dust golf course of Coober
Pedy in the Outback. Nullarbor Links is the
world's longest golf course stretching 1365
kilometres (848 miles) from Ceduna, on
South Australia's Eyre Peninsula, to Kalgoorlie
in Western Australia.
Royal Adelaide Golf Course features as one
of the 'Great Golf Courses of Australia'.
For those who want to find out what it’s like
to live like a local in the Outback, station stays
are the most relaxing way to do it.
Imagine the noise and bustle of a working
station with a backdrop of ancient mountain
ranges, and a glass of South Australian wine
waiting for guests on the homestead's shady
verandah. This is what station life is all about.
In the Flinders Ranges the stations are mostly
sheep properties and generally smaller than
Outback stations further north. Outback
stations run over vast areas of land and hold
cattle for some of Australia's big Outback
names, like Kidman and Co. Properties vary
in size and character. Accommodation styles
range from modest shearers' quarters to
elegant homesteads, where there is self-
catering, or guests can join the host family for
meals. While many of the stations mentioned
are from the Flinders Ranges and Outback
region there are station experiences available
in other regions of South Australia too.
